MILITARY Related ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS |
|
MREC, a subcommittee of the Vermont Law School International Law Society, is a law student collective that focuses on military related environmental concerns to promote awareness and enact positive change, offering practical solutions from the grassroots.
Specifically, MREC develops networks among organizations and gathers relevant information about environmental issues related to military activities to present an accurate perspective. Currently, MREC is conveying the underrepresented voice of grassroots Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from around the world. We are working with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to survey the positive and negative environmental aspects of military establishments in North America and around the world. Our mutual goal is "to identify a way forward for the application of environmental norms" in preparation for a 2009 international conference. (UNEP/GC/24/9 at 44). To this end, MREC has joined the UNEP North American Civil Society/Major Groups and is helping CSOs convey their insight to the UNEP and participating states.
